Applying to be a presenter

Question:

I tried to upload my executive summary, but it was rejected because the file is too big. It's too big because it contains photos of my product or technology. How can I include these photos with my application?

Answer:

Most digital cameras take very high resolution pictures, but as a result, the image files are huge: often 1 Mb or more per image. Drop a few of these into your executive summary, and you can easily have a file that tops 5 Mb or more.

The answer is to shrink your photos down in size, and save them in a compressed file format such as .JPG or .GIF. You can do this in any image or photo manipulation program. There are even freeware utilities that will do the job for you.

How far to shrink them? Resize your photos to be 640x480 pixels in size or smaller. On a computer screen, 640x480 works well as a full page view. For partial page or thumbnail views, you can go even smaller.

Won't that hurt my resolution? On the printed page, maybe; but on a computer monitor, you'll hardly notice the difference. Most monitors can't display images at resolutions much higher than 1024x768 pixels, and certainly can't handle the extremely high resolutions provided by today's digital cameras.

Shrink your pictures down before putting them into your executive summary, and you should be able to easily include several pictures and stay within the file size limit.

Answer:

Yes, provided the ACS partner's deadline hasn't passed yet. Simply send us a note via the site's contact form explaining the error, and we'll be happy to redirect it to the correct review board. Include your company name in your message to us, so that we can more easily identify your application.

Question:

I'd like my application to be reviewed by one of the ACS partners. How do I indicate this on my application?

Answer:

Select an ACS partner from the list of ACS PArtners at the bottom of the call for presenters page. call for presenters.

If you select an ACS partner as your referring organization, your application will be directed to the ACS partner's review board.

A complete list of ACS partners is shown on the Angel Capital Summit home page for your convenience.

When you submit your application, you'll be given the opportunity to review your application before final submittal. The review page will tell you which review board would receive your application, and you'll have the opportunity to change this before final submittal.

Question:

I made a mistake on my application, and I'd like to update it. Is there any way I can do this?

Answer:

Up to the submittal deadline, yes! Simply recall your application from review, edit it, save it again, and resubmit it.

Important: be sure to return to the system using the link provided by the partner organization through which you applied (it'll look like "businesscatapult.com/refcode/ACS08-####", where #### is a four-digit number). That makes sure your application will be submitted to the correct partner organization. You can find a complete list of partner organizations on the Call For Presenters page.

Once you log back on, you'll find your application listed on your "Entrepreneur's Home Page". If the "submit" link says "Submit to" followed by the name of your partner organization, you're in the right place

Note: After the submittal deadline, you can recall your application from review, but you can no longer resubmit it.

Question:

Would you suggest that our intellectual property (IP) be secured before engaging in this process? We are in the embryonic stages with a unique technology with tremendous upside potential.

Answer:

Bear in mind that these presentations are the first step in developing relationships with prospective investors, and that these presentations are given in a public setting. Most investors are interested in your company as an investment opportunity; they're normally not consumers of your technology. As a result, many companies find that they can give effective investor presentations without divulging proprietary data.

Having said that, each company must decide what intellectual property needs to be protected, and what proprietary data should not be disclosed in a public setting such as the Angel Capital Summit. If you're not sure what data to protect, consult a qualified specialist.

Question:

I have some red scores on my Benchmark Report; will this rule my application out? Should I bother applying if I have less than a perfect score?

Answer:

Few if any companies score perfectly on the Benchmark Survey. The benchmark is defined across industries, and while it's extremely effective in highlighting strengths and weaknesses, there may be very good reasons why any one company in a specific industry would be expected to score "off the benchmark".

As one CEO put it: "A score off the benchmark isn't a showstopper; it's a point for discussion."

Please see this discussion of how the Benchmark Survey will be used in the application process.
